Company History
On a warm spring morning in 1880, two brothers, William J. and Benjamin Huff opened the doors to the Cerro Gordo Lumber Co. in Cerro Gordo, Illinois and provided the roots of a family business that is now in what we like to call its fifth generation.
W. Lindley Huff, son of William J., expanded with the help of his son Richard W. until there were nine locations in Central Illinois. There was a central business office in the Millikin Bank building in Decatur.
In 1967, Bill Huff joined his father, Richard W. during the phase out and closing of many of the yards. In 1968 they bought Decatur Lumber Service at 2201 Rt. 51 South and hung up the Huff Lumber Co. "shingle". The office headquarters at the Millikin Bank building was then moved to the new location on the south end of Decatur.
In 2016, two employees of the yard started the “fifth generation” of the locally owned company. While they might not be blood relatives, our Huff family has always been important and evident in what we do. And in our mission Our mission is to improve the quality of our lives, the lives of our customers and others with whom we conduct our business. We serve the community- selling products and services at fair prices, being honest and forthright in these dealings; keeping in mind the only thing lasting is our relationships with others.
Today, Huff Lumber Co. sells building material products to local consumers, residential builders and commercial contractors throughout Central Illinois. We opened a new division- Huff Home Specialties. This division concentrates on selling and installing our core products to homeowners.
